Dalai Lama blames Beijing for self-immolations by monks and nuns in Tibet

In what has been described as “his first public statement on [the crisis at Kirti Monastery],” His Holiness the Dalai Lama said this week that Beijing’s “ruthless and illogical” policies in Tibet were to blame for the recent spate of immolations by Tibetan monks and nuns.

“For their own interest, not just the interest for certain sort of problem here and there, but for the whole country’s sort of future, [the Chinese government has] to act [with a] realistic sort of policy.” At least nine Tibetan monastics have self-immolated this year as an act of protest against Chinese control of Tibet.
