India: University of Buffalo professor researching Buddhist legal systems

University of Buffalo Professor Rebecca French, an expert in Tibetan law, is currently on a Fulbright scholarship in New Delhi, India, conducting research on Buddhist legal traditions. Hosted by Jawaharlal Nehru University, her project is titled “The Buddha’s Theory of Secular Law.”

In a piece from the UB Reporter, French explained that “the result of this project will be a book that will provide a more nuanced understanding of legal ideas during the Buddha’s life, his approach to monastic and secular legal problems, the central texts that present his legal theories and the legal policies of the first Buddhist empire in India.” She continued, “This will set a foundation for a new subdiscipline and add Buddhism to the world’s major legal traditions.”

Professor French’s biography can be found here, at the University of Buffalo’s website. You can also read this 2004 piece from the UB Reporter on French and her work.
