Santa Barbara Summit for Tibet coming this weekend

The weeklong Santa Barbara Summit for Tibet runs from this Saturday, January 19, though January 26, with a goal to “increase awareness in our city of Tibetan cultural, philosophical and spiritual richness, and educate citizens about current affairs in Tibet.”

“A key theme in our search for ethical and spiritually motivated community is the value of compassion, at home and across the globe,” the event’s website explains.

The week’s events include the construction of a sand mandala; Tibetan arts, crafts, and performances; and lectures and discussions about Tibet’s political situation. On Sunday, January 20, a silent walk through Santa Barbara will commemorate the approximately 100 Tibetans who have self-immolated in protest of Chinese occupation. A full schedule of events is available here. All events are free and open to the public; most will be held at the Santa Barbara Public Library.
