Thepo Rinpoche: “The People of Tibet Need Help Now”

This Sunday, March 10, is Tibetan Uprising Day, an annual observance that marks the anniversary of the 1959 uprising against the Chinese government. The failed uprising led to a Chinese crackdown on Tibet, causing the Dalai Lama and many other Tibetans to flee. Over on BoingBoing, Thepo Rinpoche has written a heartfelt plea urging world leaders to act for human rights in Tibet.

Over 100 Tibetans have self-immolated in protest of Chinese occupation since 2009.

“All of my fellow Tibetan families and children are suffering so much inside occupied Tibet,” he writes. “It is important for all conscientious citizens of the global community to amplify our collective voices on behalf of the voiceless in Tibet. ” It’s worth reading in full; click here.

Activists have created a petition urging the US government to implore China to stop suppressing Tibetan culture and religion. If 100,000 people sign by March 12, the government will have to issue a response. Click here to view and sign the petition.
