Aung San Suu Kyi unanimously reappointed as party leader
The National League for Democracy, Burma’s opposition party, has reappointed Aung San Suu Kyi as its leader at its first-ever party congress. The 120-member Central Committee voted unanimously to reappoint her, as the country looks toward elections in 2015.
The NLD’s activities were severely restricted by Burma’s military junta for over 20 years, but it won seats in parliament last year. Addressing the party over the weekend, Suu Kyi acknowledged that there have been political disputes within the NLD and called upon members to cooperate with one another.
