Dalai Lama inaugurates monastery science center

One event of modern significance could have been overlooked in the midst of all the July 6 birthday ceremonies for the Dalai Lama in the Tibetan settlement of Bylakuppe, India: His Holiness’ inauguration, the following day of the Sera Jey Science Center at one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries.

Viewed as a model for creating similar centers for the study of Western science at Buddhist monasteries, the Sera Jey Science Center represents a milestone for the Sager Family Foundation’s ongoing Science for Monks project. Bobby Sager, the lead financier for the Sera Jey Science Center, has documented more than a decade of effort to introduce science curricula in Buddhist monasteries in his recently published book, Beyond the Robe.
