Elderly Buddhist monk badly beaten in Oklahoma, forgives assailants

Buddhist monk Tony Chulsuwan, recuperating in Oklahoma after a robbery and near-fatal beating, expresses forgiveness for his attackers

Near Spencer, Oklahoma, KFOR-TV reported on the near-fatal beating and robbery of 66-year old Tony Chulsuwan, described by shocked neighbors as a “devout Buddhist monk” who lives alone and “uses the little he has to take care of his rescue animals.”

Chulsuwan was released from the hospital yesterday and is recuperating at a friend’s home. KFOR followed up with an interview piece, saying, “As part of Chulsuwan’s faith, he has the utmost respect for life. He won’t even eat the eggs from the chickens he raises in case one is fertilized, and he says he certainly would never have harmed either of these teens. Also because of his faith, he’s not angry with them, but says he does fear who they might hurt next. “‘I forgive, I forgive. But the thing is the kid like this, they’re not going to stop,’ said Chulsuwan.”
