Philip Glass, Riyaaz Qawwali, and more gather to benefit Garrison Institute on October 24

On October 24, Philip Glass will be joined by a number of other notable musicians for “In the Spirit,” a concert of music from the world’s great traditions to benefit the Garrison Institute on its tenth anniversary. The show will take place at NYC’s Town Hall, at 123 West 43rd Street, and will feature:

  • The New York City premiere of “Songs of Milarepa” by Philip Glass (with Gregory Purnhagen, baritone, and Nelson Padgett, piano)
  • Pomerium Vocal Ensemble — sacred music of the Renaissance
  • Riyaaz Qawwali — ecstatic Sufi vocal tradition from the Indian subcontinent
  • Foday Musa Suso — master kora (harp-lute) player from Gambia, West Africa
  • Omar Faruk Tekbilek — virtuoso ney (Turkish flute) player, performing Sufi music of the Middle East with Murat Tekbilek on frame drum
  • Wu Man — performing traditional music and original music by Philip Glass on pipa (Chinese lute), with the electro-acoustic Scorchio Quartet
