Eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara, Tibet, c. 1500

Thirteen centuries of Himalayan Buddhist art will be on display at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, CA, from March 28 to August 25. The centerpiece of the nearly 40 objects will be a 20-foot tall thangka depicting the future Buddha, Maitreya, commissioned in the 18th century by the Eighth Dalai Lama.
