Walk to Feed the Hungry 2014 – San Francisco

October 4, 2014
1:00 pmto4:00 pm

Walk to Feed the Hungry

Close to a billion people worldwide face hunger as a fact of daily life. Hunger and related illnesses claim some ten million lives each year, half of them children. The increasingly serious effects of climate change are making it ever harder on farmers and increasing the price of food. We may feel helpless in the face of so much need, but by joining together we can make a difference and make a gesture of care and compassion to express our commitment to helping those in need.

The walk will begin at Norras Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Chinatown, and wend its way through to Japantown, stopping at temples along the way, and end at the Mindfulness Care Center. There will be photo ops at Grace Cathedral and the Japanese Peace Pagoda. Check out the photos from last year’s Walk.

San Francisco has a rich Buddhist history. There will be opportunities to see beautiful shrines as well as beautiful views as we visit some of the city’s high spots (yes, there will be some hills to climb). Of course, the greatest opportunity of all is to express our compassion through helping the poorest of the poor around the globe.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit a local charity Project Open Hand. People are encouraged to join-in or depart as they need during the 3.5 mile walk. If you can, please wear a white shirt, so we can be identified as a group on the busy streets of San Francisco.

Walk to Feed the Hungry 2014 – San Jose

October 19, 2014
9:00 amto2:00 pm
9:00 amto2:00 pm

Walk to Feed the Hungry

This year Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi, founder and chairman of Buddhist Global Relief, will lead this 4.6 mile Walk of compassion. Please join us for as we visit places where the Dharma is shared and practiced, enjoy time with spiritual friends, and learn how our acts of generosity are helping relieve suffering locally and globally.

Check-in will begin at 8:15 AM. Please arrive early so we can start walking promptly at 9 AM.
This 4.6 mile walk will start at the San Jose Friends Meeting House, the oldest Quaker meeting house in California, and the home of three Buddhist groups: San Jose Dharma Punx, San Jose Insight Meditation, and Floating Zendo. We will walk first to a Sri Lankan temple, Buddhi Vihara at 402 Knowles Ave., Santa Clara, to receive blessings and pay respects to the Bodhi Tree and the venerable monks. Then, we will walk to the San Jose Rose Garden at the corner of Naglee and Dana Ave., arriving around 11:30am. The San Jose Rose Garden is an official Display Garden for the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) and in 2010 was named “America’s Best Rose Garden.” We will enjoy lunch together in the Rose Garden and listen to inspiring words about the work, locally and globally, that is being carried out with the help of Buddhist Global Relief, before returning to the Friends Meeting House.

Again this year, Hong Truong and her friends have generously offered to provide a lunch for everyone who walks. Please check the box when you register to let us know that you want lunch. If you do not sign up for lunch, then please bring a packed lunch (which will be transported by car to the picnic area). Also, be sure to bring a sun hat, and water bottle. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Recovery Café San Jose.
