Walk to Feed the Hungry – Escondido

October 23, 2014

Walk

Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi, Chairman of Buddhist Global Relief, and about 45 Monks and Nuns will be leading the BGR 1.8-mile Escondido Walk to Feed the Hungry on Thursday, October 23, 2014 including all Buddhist denominations.
This is not only a great way to support BGR in its compassionate efforts to help feed those who are suffering from chronic hunger, but also a positive way to spread compassion to the local community by harmoniously gathering together. Mindful walking, generosity, listening to Dhamma talks, and making spiritual friends are great ways to heal, brighten, and develop the mind as taught by the Buddha. Everyone is invited to attend this uplifting event.

People are encouraged to join-in or depart as they need during the 1.8-mile walk. Everyone is encouraged to set a personal intention before walking, and those who wish to walk mindfully in silence may do so but it is not required. Feel free to walk at your own pace. It will be a time for practice, mindful walking, spreading loving kindness, making spiritual friends, and exercise. The walk will begin and end in Escondido’s Grape Day Park, as we raise awareness about world hunger on the sidewalks of Escondido’s City Center area.

BGR will give part of the walk proceeds to Escondido’s Interfaith Community Services Food Program which serves about 174,000 meals a year.

Many groups will help support the event such as: Deer Park Monastery, The Western Buddhist Monastic Gathering, Aloka Vihara and Karuna Buddhist Vihara.

People can do the entire walk, or just part of it as they wish. It is fine to just walk for one mile!

After the walk, the monks and nuns will eat lunch in the park. Participants are welcome to bring their bag lunch and join-in. This is a chance for conversation and photos.
